MATTERHORN

The Matterhorn is one of the most famous and photographed peaks in the world. It is located in the Alps on the border of Switzerland and Italy and reaches a height of 4,478 meters above sea level. Its name comes from the German matte (mountain meadow) and the characteristic shape of the mountain, horn (horn). Its pyramidal shape with sharp ridges was created as a geological unique feature when the African tectonic plate slid over the European one, thereby lifting rocks from the seabed and deeper layers. Its specific shape was subsequently shaped by erosion and glaciers, which cut away the walls from all sides.

The mountain is known for its difficulty and unpredictable weather. Strong winds, sudden changes in visibility and the risk of falling rocks are common. The most frequently used ascent route leads along the Hörnli ridge from the Swiss side. The ascent is technically demanding and requires experience in mountain hiking and climbing. The first successful ascent took place in 1865, but the descent went down tragically in history due to the fall of part of the expedition.
